With global sourcing a given for most retailers, supply chains have evolved into ever-more complex supply networks, making understanding, managing and tracking the flow of goods a much more difficult practice.

In the race to speed new products to market design teams are slashing development times, buyers are sourcing goods from around the world at lowest cost and production lead times are being cut in half. It is all too easy for poor supply chain decisions to be the merchandise process' downfall and erode profits.

Not to be forgotten is the growing risk involved with transporting merchandise across the globe. The threat of terrorism, and potential breaches to security, have only served to increase the level of supply chain compliance and verification needed for adherence to national and governmental regulations.

A real-time view of information is required, from production through delivery, but this is impossible with disparate systems, error-prone spreadsheets and email communication.

The supply chain team must work closely with buying and merchandising, as well as external suppliers and third party logistics providers, to ensure the most cost-effective delivery of goods to the right location at the right time. To do this they must be part of the overall merchandise lifecycle process, using transparent information to ensure compliance, make informed decisions and minimize supply chain risk.
